iPGN CS-Comp - News
iPGN-Comp Season 4 LIVE!
After years of delays and setbacks the iPGN-Comp Season 4 has been released (yay!!)

Most of you would have seen the major improvements on IRC and in CS... but now you can see the new and improved website!

I would like to send out a MASSIVE thank you to all the iPGN Admins and Helpers for their support, testing and understanding during the creation of Season 4. I would like to mention a big thanks to Catch-22, Mickey and Mandrake for their advice and assistance during its development.

There are a few issues still to be completed (FAQ, How to Play, Dream Team). If you require any assistance please ask in the IRC channel.

Thanks,
Matt (DarK)

Bot Update
Yes, the bots back online, no we're not ready for full on games yet.

The story:
Late March the server hosting the bot died, one the hard drives failed. I had been backing up the code, but my backup also failed, meaning I'm only left with out of date code.
I was advised by staff at Primus that they would attempt to recover the data and believed that we had a good chance of getting it back. That’s the last I’ve heard from anyone who has physical contact with the server.

I’ve found a version of code from late January, which puts me two months behind. This means we have to start the BETA again and re-fix the bugs found.

I’m not going to give anymore excuses. I have let a lot of people down over the past 2 years but we’ve put way to much effort into it for the CS-Comp for it to die like this. I’m determined to get the Season 4 iPGN CS-Comp bot fully running, which I hope will be fully operational in the coming months. There is no release date, it’ll be ready when it is.

I would like to apologise to all the admins, helpers and the users of the bot, personal commitments and health issues have limited my availability over the past 2 months.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me in #iPGN-Comp (please be patient for responses!)

S4 BETA Update
As some of you already know we are currently BETAing Season 4 of the CS-Comp.

First of all I would like to express a great deal of thanks to the admins and helpers for all their support over the past two years (it's taken this long to create it). Especially to Catch-22, Mickey, Tagert and Mandrake.

Currently there's no bot in the IRC channel due to some server issues, but I'm hoping to have it up and going very soon.

I've almost ironed out the bugs in the bot, so we will be going live soon.
I’m open to any suggestions you may have and please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

I'm retiring
It's with a touch of sadness that I'm announcing that I'm severing my involvement with iPGN-Comp. I'm pretty much the only admin that's been involved right from the beginning (mid-2003) up until now. Unfortunately, because I don't get paid I can't justify spending the time I once did doing all the things I do 'behind the scenes'. With a new season getting under way I feel that this is probably as good a time as any to exit stage left.

When season 4 is 'stable' I will endeavour to port the graphing system to it if there is sufficient demand but that's probably where the line will be drawn.

Thanks to all the helpers/admins that have helped make my job easier and to all the players that fill up the games.

Mickey will be taking over in the things I used to do (eg. ban appeals, etc.) so please direct queries to him.

GraphMaker
Hi everyone.
We've had some very annoying technical difficulties over the past few weeks, firstly with the server going down and now the bot + HLTV.

The good news is that I'm pleased to show off a program that everyone can use that generates player graphs like you can see on the website. The advantage is that you can see any graph of any player and update it as often as you like. See this forum post for more information.

IRC Graphs
Yes, another website update.
I've done some IRC graphs for you. You can find them on the graphs page or if you're lazy you can click underneath.

iPGN-Comp Turns 3!
I just noticed that in the last couple of weeks we've passed the third year of iPGN-Comp. We've come a long way in 3 years (8635 games for starters) smile
Thanks to everyone who has made this milestone possible and lets hope there are many more.

IRC Stats
I've added some IRC stats to the webpage. You can use the link on the left or click right here:

Graphs are fixed
Good afternoon,
Just a note to say that the updated graphs are finally up, you can take a peek using the link on the left.

Website update
Hi again.
The bot is now uploading results to the website. I've updated the streakcity section and the graphs should get uploaded overnight (it takes quite a while though so bare with me).

Website Issues
Hi everyone.
Please bear with us whilst the issues surrounding the website are addressed. There are a couple of hurdles to be cleared before we can start putting up the latest game results on the site. Fear not, however, as no game-related data has been lost. When the data is up to date I will regenerate the graphs in the graphing gallery and soon after that I shall also unveil the next stage in the graphing project: IRC graphs.

Streak City Update
As per a suggestion from Dominator, I've removed people from StreakCity if they have been banned permanently from the competition (eg. for cheating).
July 29, 2006, 9:35 pm by Catch-22

Streak City is fixed
Just a quick note to let you know that I have fixed up a couple of bugs (one old, one new) in the Streak City page so the contents of that page should now be accurate. Let me know if you find any irregularities.

We have moved to GameSurge
Much like the greater Australian CS Community we have decided to move (or for those of you with longer memories I should say move back) to the IRC Network. From our point of view we have become exacerbated with the total lack of support that ETG has given us in the pursuit of channel ban avoiders and general idiots. When this is compounded by the bugs in ChanServ (and I apologise to everyone and anyone who has ever had to PM myself or another admin to get a timed ban removed), recent instability with ChanServ quitting all the time and now the migration over to GameSurge it's hard to justify the status quo.

At this stage we strongly encourage people to
register with GameSurge as we will eventually be enforcing the +r channel mode which means you won't be able to join #iPGN-Comp without registering. During the settling in period we will leave this option off. Once you have registered you can use /mode $me +x to hide your hostmask (similar to vhosts on ETG) and you can also use the GameSurge website to create a custom title.

Finally, we implore you to carefully check that you use your correct stats entry when playing your games on GameSurge initially. A lot of you will have different ident/hostmask combinations (especially when you use +x on yourself) so please save the admins some time and request a rename before the game starts. If when you go !stat and the bot doesn't tell you your stats you will most likely require a rename.

Rate Update
After some extended discussion amongst the admins and helpers we have decided upon the following change to the way rates are handled in-game.

*The server is now capped at 101/20000
*Admins will only check rates and direct players to use certain rates if a player is lagging (in the interests of both teams)

We hope that these changes will reflect the way that many games are run in the competitive realm of CS.

Individual time graphs
These new graphs show when you play your comp games and show your wins/draws/losses at these times. Check out the graphing gallery for more info.

Player Streak Graphs
I've introduced some more graphs.
These track each player's individual streaks over time.
They're in the graphing gallery (the links next to everyone's name called, funnily enough, "streaks").

More histograms
In addition to the Score Histograms I just put up I've also added some Games per Player Histograms. Again, accessible on the left via the Graphing Gallery.

New Graphs - Score Histogram
Greetings all.

I have just finished compiling some graphs that show the distribution of player scores. You can see them via the Graphing Gallery which is accessible by the link on the left.

Enjoy.

Liquidshade is back!
The title says it all! After some time in the retired mode, I'm pleased to announce that Liquidshade is back to his old position as a cs-comp helper.

United having a break
United has retired from his helper position for a break. We would like to thank him for his amazing effort and wish him well in doing other things!

Small Rule Addition
This should be obvious to most people but we've just added this little rule:

• Each player is allowed to buy one HE, one Smoke and two Flash grenades per round.

Of course this and all the other rules can be found on the rules page.

Graphing Gallery
After much thought, much coding, much frustration and much cheering, I'm happy to announce the latest addition to the website: the Graphing Gallery . There are two sections: one being graphs depicting general game stats and the other being player graphs. Player graphs are generated only for people who have played 25 games or more. To find your own graph quickly, click on the "Individual Player Graphs (Minimum 25 Games Played)" title to sort them alphabetically.

If you've had your stats 'merged' by Dark at some stage there's a chance that you haven't been counted or you may have two graphs. If so, just contact me and I'll merge your two graphs.

All the graphs will be updated approximately once per day (at the same time that Streak City and the Dream Team is).

This is by no means final, they'll be tweaked and added to over the next few weeks and Stage 2 (more/different graphs) will come up after that when I get some time.

Finally, thanks to my fellow admins/helpers who helped out with ideas and were guinea pigs for some of the initial ones.

CS-Comp 'test'
We have become aware of a 'joke' CS-Comp helper test/application form. It's worth noting the gutlessness of the creator to post it to an anonymous filehosting service. It shows complete distain for the countless hours that the helpers and admins have put into a free service for you. If someone did (or still does) have a concern with the way this competition is run they can feel free to talk to myself, Dark, one of the other helpers, or post a (constructive) thread in the CS-Comp discussion forum. All bans are appealable (and have always been) via a PM to Dark, myself or an email to games@iprimus.com.au

The Dream Team
RSVPs for the Dream Team can be made in this thread:
http://www.ipgn.com.au/forum/showthread.php?t=40739
Please make sure you read the first post in that thread before replying. I will cull down the inactive people after a short period of time until we get a good number of active people for a game.

Rule additon (again)
Forgot to post this here but if you check out the rules page you'll notice that the 12th dot point is new. I'll quote it here:

• It is the responsibility of the player to communicate with the admin when there is a difficulty either regarding them joining the server (including a delay in joining the server) or an unexpected departure from the server. This should be done in PM to the admin (in irc) or communicated directly to the admin when both of you are alive or dead (in the server, preferably more than once).

Rules amendment
The paragraph that starts "• In the case of a player(s) dropping" has been tweaked to make a few issues clearer.

Extended Admin Stats Update
I've added % splits so you can see what percent each admin has done since the extended admin stats have been gathering (early Feb).

Extended Admin Stats
http://ipgn.com.au/cs-comp/?p=admin-stats

Check out the 3rd table down - you can see the games/week of each admin. Clicking on the link below that table takes you to the raw data where you can see more detailed stats based on all the data that I have been gathering since early Feb. It gets updated about once per day.

Proudly brought to you by Catch, 800 lines of code and iPGN-Comp!

Rule addition
Please draw your attention to the following rule. It's specific addition has become necessary to encourage less "omg start a game" and "omg dellast" kinds of comments that only serve to annoy the admins.

• There will sometimes come a time when you are desperate for a game to start or for the admin currently taking the game to !dellast and remove the restriction preventing people who played in the last game from joining. When this happens please sit tight. Don't bug ops and/or the admin taking the game about this either in the channel or in PM because it can get very annoying very quickly. All of the admins have played many many games and don't need reminding of when they need to do specific commands and are also aware that they can start a game at any time. Repeat offenders will be removed from the channel.

The full rules, as always, can be found here:
http://ipgn.com.au/cs-comp/?p=rules
There is sometimes some confusion over which maps are statted and which are unstatted. You can find the full list on that page.

New CS Admins
Congrats go to the new CS Admins!
http://www.ipgn.com.au/forum/showthread.php?t=37162
They will be running CS-Comp games too so keep an eye out and be nice (as usual) because there's an incredible amount of stuff for them to take on board over the next few weeks. wink

The Website is back!
Sadly my insightful and witty news posts are gone. sad
On a positive note we're almost back to where we were before the great website crash of '05. I'm constantly looking at the parts of the website that I maintain (eg. StreakCity) and I have one or two things I'd like to implement so watch this space!
