Just needs to be said - was this not one of the best weekends of football we've had in a long time? Sure a few nailbiters here and there are good, but to have five or six in one round of footy is just great.
• First we had the two teams in crisis, Richmond and Hawthorn give it everything they've got until the last minute to have it decided by a point.
• Then we have a thoroughly entertaining display of Essendon and Sydney with consistent football all day, and a late surge from Sydney.
• Of course, there was the Western Bulldogs and the Kangaroos, decided by freak goal in the dying stages of the game for the dogs to win by a point.
• Then there's the highlight of the weekend - the blockbuster between St. Kilda and Brisbane at the Telstra Dome, decided by a controversial behind and a 55m goal moments before the siren.
• The derby in the west, back and forth football all night before Fremantle got away with a 10 point victory.
• The undermanned Collingwood putting on a gallant fight against Port Adelaide in a game where the pies were written off as having no hope at all, before Port piled on the goals in the last 5 minutes to steal the win.
• Adelaide and Geelong was a bit backwards and forwards at the start, but eventually Geelong got away with the lead, and dispersed any challenge the crows attempted to make - almost finished in spectacular style, with a 70m bomb from 200 gamer, Ben Graham, that narrowly missed the goal.
• Then lastly is the Carlton and Melbourne match, which for the purpose of taunting Carlton supporters I will refer to as the 'Melbourne/Carlton Massacre'. While not the most exciting game of footy you'll ever see, a 105 point beating is always funny (if you're not the supporter of said losers).
This is shaping up to be a stellar season of football indeed. Just hope it stays this exciting for the duration of the year.
The Ladder...
1 St Kilda: W6 L0, 149.77% (24)
2 Melbourne: W5 L1, 137.48% (20)
3 Port Adelaide: W5 L1, 136.92% (20)
4 Fremantle: W5 L1, 121.4% (20)
5 Brisbane: W4 L2, 126.96% (16)
6 Essendon: W4, L2, 93.12% (16)
7 Sydney: W3 L3, 112.62% (12)
8 Kangaroos: W3 L3, 98.72% (12)
9 West Coast: W2 L4, 90.98% (8)
10 Geelong: W2 L4, 90.04% (8)
11 Western Bulldogs: W2 L4, 90.03% (8)
12 Carlton: W2 L4, 84.52% (8)
13 Richmond: W2 L4, 71.23% (8)
14 Adelaide: W1 L5, 85.31% (4)
15 Hawthorn: W1 L5, 81.14% (4)
16 Collingwood: W1 L5, 72.31% (4)
Noteworthy stuff:
- Carlton dropped from 9th place with a percentage of around 103%, to 12th place with a percentage of 84.52%.
- Collingwood are dead last for the first time since 1999.
- Essendon have moved up to 6th place after starting the season at the bottom of the ladder after 2 games.
- Brisbane should take future challengers more seriously than they took St. Kilda.
- Port Adelaide need to get their heads out of the arses so they don't get caught with their pants down against undermanned, bottom-of-the-ladder sides again.
