It was a night when a lewd message was left on a woman's mobile phone, players got drunk into the early hours and some visited a brothel. It has cost two Blues players their positions, five others a total of $20,000 in fines and yet more heads will roll. Brad Walter reports (http://www.smh.com.au/articles/2004/05/21/1085120125492.html).

Sydney Roosters fullback Anthony Minichiello last night became the second player sacked from the NSW Origin side and five others received fines totalling $20,000 for misbehaviour after a midweek team bonding session.

Minichiello was stood down from Wednesday night's series opener at Telstra Stadium for taking his mobile phone out on a team drinking session, contrary to team policy. The phone was later used by dumped St George Illawarra centre Mark Gasnier to make a lewd call to a 27-year-old woman.

Minichiello was observed in Gasnier's presence as calls were made outside their Coogee hotel, while a group of nine players and two members of team security waited for taxis at about 3.40am on Wednesday.

The security personnel and team managers Chris Johns and Gerard Raper face the sack after Origin I, while further action is also expected against the six players penalised yesterday by the NSWRL. Johns tendered his resignation yesterday but it was rejected, at least for the time being.

In addition, the NRL will consider whether to invoke the $350,000 suspended sentence against the Bulldogs over incidents during and after a pre-season camp in Coffs Harbour as Willie Mason and Mark O'Meley were among the players fined.

Mason was fined $6000 for three separate offences, including signing the name of Roosters second-rower Craig Fitzgibbon during an autograph session on Thursday night.

Acting NSWRL chairman John Chalk said the penalty - equating to the player's match payment for each Origin - was the maximum his board could impose, and directors had little choice but to accept Mason's explanation that a doodling that offended some fans was "a marshmallow man".

It's a simple job for these guys: show up, play football and don't do anything stupid.

And they still **** it up.

How stupid are these bastards.

what annoys me is that any average joe could do something like this and no one would think twice
but since there is a buck to be earned for the woman involved she sells her story and it gets blown right up
that said, i'm not condoning what they have done

that's just the life of anyone if the public eye.
everything you do is going to be blown up x10

but they know that, and you'd think they'd learn from all the other idiots out there.

they're footy players, probably quit school at 16 and if they did finish school they were probably dumb asses anyway. what can we expect.

I agree, but it no excuse.

They are supposed to be grown adults, unless they want to be treated like high school kids on a field trip they should behave like grown adults. Plus in the light of recent events surely anyone with half a brain would realise that they should be trying, more than usual, not to do anything stupid. Or maybe the concept of rebuilding a tarnished image never occured to them.

ahh that's bs, she didn't go to the police or the media at all in the first place, all she did was attempt to contact minnacello, as she knew him (hence why her number was in his phone, she'd been over to his place for a bbq the week before) and was offended by the msg, as well as thinking it wasn't his voice. Couldn't get in touch with him, so she left a complaint with the Roosters.

That's all she did, and she was completely in the right to do it. Hell her name still hasn't even been mentioned in the media, so she ain't getting jack for it.

And yeah we come down harder on these guys, but as has been said they're rolemodels, they're celebrities and they're in the public eye, and they shouldn't have done it. Them getting smashed and stuff I doubt anyone would have cared or blew it up, but could the NRL have really have afforded to be found covering up yet another sex scandal?

He is still part of the team because his actions were "not his fault".

The ADD medicine he needs to take is on the Banned Substances List for the NRL...

Pretty lame excuse...

One of the few reasons that make these little issue explode so big is that there is sponsorship involved.

It's an extremely pissweak excuse, if not total fabrication.

I am sick to death of the excuses these guys keep coming up with to pass of what is attrocious behaviour. If they were anyone else behaving like this, they'd be in jail, under investigation or someone would have smacked their head in. Instead these guys have the club or the league or their managers just fix it up.

The reason that these thing blow up so big at the moment is that they are paid big money by companies with their reputations on the line and that they are held up as supposed role models and they leave a litany of abuse and misbehaviour behind them. Julian O'Neal defacating in teammates shoes and smearing faeces in a motel room, Brad Fittler waking up drunk outside Balmain Police Station the day before being named Australian captain, numerous rape and sexual assault charges, the list just goes on.

Excuses are like arseholes... everyone has one.

As I said before, 3 things on the to-do list: Show up, play footy, don't do anything stupid and for that they make 6 figure sums, not hard even for meat-heads.

The security personnel and team managers Chris Johns and Gerard Raper certainly doesnt help when their team manager is called "raper"
